Why care for an object in recycled sail?
A boat sail was designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the open sea. Recycled into a decorative accessory, it keeps that resilience. But a few simple habits ensure that it ages gracefully rather than wearing prematurely.
Step 1: regular cleaning
For indoor decorative use (lamps, cushions, paintings), a weekly dusting with a microfibre cloth is enough. For bags and baskets, shake them regularly to remove dust and sand.
Step 2: deep cleaning (1 to 2 times a year)
For a Dacron sail:
- Prepare lukewarm water (max 30°C) with a mild pH-neutral soap (liquid Marseille soap or Marseille soap flakes)
- Apply with a sponge or microfibre cloth, in gentle circular movements
- Rinse with clean water, without rubbing
- Dry by laying flat, in the open air, in the shade
For a spinnaker (ripstop nylon, more delicate): cold water, mild soap, drying flat is essential (never hanging, which could distort it).
Step 3: treating common stains
- Oil / sauce stain: dab immediately with kitchen paper. Sprinkle with talc or bicarbonate of soda, leave for 1 hour, brush. If it persists, mild soap + rinse
- Wine / coffee stain: cold water immediately (never hot), dab, rinse. If it persists: diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Grease / cooking stain: mild degreasing washing-up liquid, dab, rinse thoroughly
- Pen mark: dab with 70% isopropyl alcohol, rinse with clean water
Warning: never use bleach, never ammonia, never a tumble dryer.
Step 4: caring for the marine rope
The rope handles on our bags and baskets develop a natural patina. To bring them back into shape: gentle dry brushing with a couch-grass (chiendent) brush. If there is a stain, lukewarm water + mild soap + rinse.
Step 5: caring for the French wood
For lamp bases and keyring tags in oak or ash:
- Dust with a soft cloth
- Once a year: linseed oil applied with a cloth, gentle polishing
- For a light scratch: very gentle sanding with 240-grit sandpaper, then reapply the oil
Step 6: off-season storage
If you will not be using it for several months (e.g. a beach bag in winter):
- Clean it thoroughly before putting it away
- Stuff the inside with tissue paper to keep its shape
- Store it in a cotton cover (never plastic: it stops the material breathing)
- A dry place, out of direct light
