Boat Sail Wall Art: Textile Pictures for Your Walls
Sail numbers, headboards, seams and oak frames: how a recycled sail becomes a wall picture, and how to choose yours.
By OÈST Ateliers3 min read

Some sails have too much character to end up as a bag or a lampshade. A large painted number, a reinforced head, a club badge, a seam that held through years of wind: these fragments deserve to be looked at for their own sake. That is how OÈST’s recycled boat sail pictures came about: textile art compositions in oak frames that tell a sailing story on your wall.
From sail to picture
A sail carries many marks from its life at sea: the letters and numbers that identify the boat, the zigzag seams joining its panels, the reinforcements at the corners, the eyelets, the badges, sometimes the repairs. These are its textures and scars, and they are what we bring out.
In the atelier, Nicolas de Chénerilles chooses the fragment, frames the composition so that a letter, a number or a patch falls in the right place, then stretches the cloth in an oak frame. The wood balances the technical cloth: the warmth of oak, the freshness of the sail. The Tableau Hossegor, pictured above, shows it well: a cream cloth, an eyelet numbered 5, a cable running along the edge and a blue badge, brought together in a frame with rounded corners.
Since every sail is different, every picture is a one-off. No two exist.
The pictures in the collection
All our pictures combine recycled sail and an oak frame. Here are their sizes, to help you choose according to the wall you want to dress.

- Tableau Hossegor: H 79 cm x W 60 cm, €395.

Where to hang a sail picture
Choosing the wall matters as much as choosing the picture. A few pointers:
- Above a sofa or a sideboard: the large landscape formats (Tableau 04, F 015, FRA 17) dress a wide wall without overwhelming it.
- In a hallway or corridor: the 80 cm portrait formats (blanc/bleu, bleu/blanc, Hossegor) guide the eye.
- Under a high ceiling or along a staircase: the Tableau Têtière AC, at 185 cm tall, is made for big volumes.
- In a bedroom or a study: a medium format brings a calm marine note without crowding the room.
- In a hotel, restaurant or reception hall: a large sail picture gives a place a strong identity. For a custom size or composition, see our professionals page.
Styling a sail picture
A sail picture is a statement piece. To keep its full effect:
- one per wall, on a light or neutral background;
- space around it, with no frames or shelves competing for attention;
- soft light, and out of direct sunlight if possible;
- an echo of the materials elsewhere in the room: light wood furniture, a sail cushion, a recycled sail light.
We go into these rules in our article how to bring an upcycled marine object into your decor.
Caring for your picture
A picture needs very little care: regular dusting with a microfibre cloth on the sail and a soft cloth on the oak frame. No bleach, no harsh products. For the details, read our care tutorial for sail objects.
