What can you do with an old boat sail?

A boat sail has a limited lifespan: 5 to 10 years for a cruising sail, sometimes less for racing sails. When it can no longer hold the wind, a sailor has two options: throw it away... or give it a second life. This practical guide lists the options available in France in 2026.

Option 1: take your sail to a port waste facility

French ports have dedicated waste facilities for nautical waste. Ask your harbour master’s office. The drawback: the sail ends up as final waste, with no recovery.

Option 2: give it to an upcycling workshop

Several workshops in France turn sails into design objects, including OÈST Ateliers (Landes) and 727 Sailbags. We collect sails in good condition free of charge in our area, or arrange shipping by carrier for other regions.

Option 3: sell it to another private owner

Sails that are still usable can be resold on specialist websites (Le Bon Coin, Sailing Anarchy). Be sure to state: material (Dacron, Mylar, Kevlar), dimensions, general condition.

How to prepare your sail before donating it to OÈST

• Rinse it lightly in fresh water to remove dried sea salt
• Dry it completely before folding
• Fold it concertina-style to limit crease marks
• Take photos before sending so we can plan the project ahead
